More and more new cars leave the factory without a full-size spare. Here is what each of the three options actually gives you.
A full-size spare tire
The safest option — an identical or near-identical tire that drives normally to a workshop. The downside is the weight and space it takes in the boot, which is why manufacturers increasingly leave it out.
A space-saver spare
A narrow tire on a smaller rim, meant to get you to a tire shop, not for long drives. Speed is usually limited to around 80 km/h. Good for saving space, but it does not solve the problem long-term — you still need a repair or a proper replacement.
A repair kit (sealant or foam)
The lightest and cheapest thing to carry. It only works on small punctures in the tread, not on sidewall cuts, blowouts or rim damage. After using it, the tire still needs a professional check, and the inside needs cleaning of the sealant.
Our recommendation
Whatever is in your boot, treat it as a temporary fix, not a repair. If you are unsure whether a tire is safe to keep driving on, or you have none of the above, it is simpler to call mobile tire service — we come to your address and assess on the spot whether it needs a repair or a replacement.
