When a tire blows on the motorway, everything happens at high speed and vehicles behind you cannot stop suddenly. Protect yourself and your passengers first, and only then deal with the wheel. This guide covers the motorway through Belgrade, the city bypass and the motorways towards Novi Sad and Niš.
1. The moment the tire blows
Hold the steering wheel firmly and do not brake hard. Release the accelerator and let the car slow down. Once the speed drops, brake gently and switch on the hazard lights. Move to the right lane and then to the hard shoulder. If there is no hard shoulder, continue slowly to the nearest rest area, petrol station or exit, even if it damages the rim. A rim is cheaper than an accident.
2. Once you stop
- Stop as far to the right as possible, with the wheels turned away from the road.
- Put on a reflective vest before getting out. It is mandatory equipment in Serbia.
- Get out on the right side, away from traffic, together with all passengers.
- Place the warning triangle far enough behind the car for drivers to see it in time. On a motorway this is much further than in town.
- Wait behind the guardrail, not next to or in front of the car.
3. Should you change the wheel yourself?
Only if the hard shoulder is wide, the damaged wheel is on the right side and you have a working spare and tools. If the wheel is on the left, next to traffic, do not change it. Vehicles pass a metre away at 130 km/h. The same applies at night, in rain or fog.
4. Who to call
For roadside assistance on the motorway you can call AMSS on 1987. On the motorway and bypass in and around Belgrade, a mobile tire fitter also comes and repairs or replaces the tire on the spot, without towing. Tell us the kilometre marker, your direction and the nearest exit, or send your location via Viber.
5. After the change
With a compact spare, drive no faster than 80 km/h and replace the tire as soon as possible. Check the spare's pressure, which is often low after years in the boot. After hitting a pothole or kerb, check the rim too. If the steering wheel shakes, read about steering wheel vibration and balancing.
